Feeding via g-tube for medical reasons can be done using blended meals. The right blender is essential! The average blender is not capable of pureeing meat, but the VitaMix can accomplish the task! I frequently share that I believe the VitaMix could puree the contents of my garage if I ever needed that. My VitaMix is the Super 5000 and it has been running strong for 7 years without missing a beat! There are some secrets to achieving the full life from a VitaMix. Benefit from my mistakes:
Do not put your blender in the dishwasher – the bearings in the base are not meant to withstand that type of cleaning. Cleaning instructions come with the blender – most of the cleaning is done by blending hot water and a couple drops of dish soap liquid. Rinse well! A couple of other handy tools to clean your blender:
The top one is a dish-soap-filled scrubber which is useful for the sides of the blender – inside and out. The second is a really cool tool I found at Bed, Bath & Beyond. It is non-absorbent (will not breed bacteria the way a sponge can) soft and strong enough to scrub the corners and bottom of the inside of the blender. It is a crystal stemware brush. It also works well for cleaning the lid plug – the clear removal part of the lid.
Using this combination – blending soapy water for a minute or two, scrubbing the insides of the blender when needed, and using the stemware “brush” to clean the hard-to-reach places, rinsing well with hot water and drying – has resulted in a very clean tool and no concerns about bacterial growth.
